Ruggers to Victory

By Matthew Welander | Wednesday, October 23, 1996

The Dartmouth men's rugby club earned great acclaim these past two weekends, continuing its weekly lecture series entitled Precision Demolition and Comprehensive Domination in Contact Sports. The DRFC easily defeated Boston University and Amherst in New England First Division play and tied Army in a
friendly match at Sachem Field.

The Dartmouth ruggers headed down to Magazine Beach in Cambridge on Saturday, October 5, and gleefully crushed a young and struggling Boston University team 79-0. Fullback Mike 'Hard guy' Morn '97 led the scoring in the BU match with 19 points on eight conversions and one penalty goal. Captain and flyhalf Torbjorn 'How Swede it is' Dimblad '97 scored three tries and scrumhalf Doug 'My dad's a poet' Burnaford '98 had two more. Juniors Dave 'Every day is a good hair day' Miller '98 and Doug 'What women?' Heyman '98 scored tries in their A side debuts this year. Forwards Pete 'The Mack' Martin '97, Rob 'I'm fast - really' Leathern '97 and Dan 'It's what's for dinner' Thiebault '97 scored as well. Wings Scott 'Baby face' Whiting '99 and Jeff 'Roadrunner' Woods '97 each contributed a try to complete the carnage. Stray softballs notwithstanding, the victory in the alleged contest clinched a playoff spot for Dartmouth in the Northeast playoffs on November 2. The score is one of the highest New England first division margins in recent history and put Dartmouth's total scoring at 217 points in four matches.

This past weekend, the gentlemen in green demolished previously unbeaten Amherst College on Saturday to claim their third consecutive New England Championship. Captain and flyhalf Dimblad '97 scored three tries to lead the Green in scoring with fifteen points. Winger Woods '97 was right behind with two tries for ten points and fullback Morn '97 had eight points in kicked conversions. Wing Whitmer '97, center Gregg 'I thought these guys were supposed to be good' Smith '97, and meat product Thiebault '97 each scored a try as well. The 48-3 win gave Dartmouth the championship of the New England Premier League for the third straight year and the fourth time in the last 5 years. The DRFC have not lost a league game since 1993. The New England championship also gives the DRFC a home game for the first round of Northeast Playoffs on November 2.

After the pleasing win against Amherst on Saturday, Dartmouth came out
against a not suprisingly big and strong Army who drove up from West Point in a disappointingly cushy tour bus. While the clean-shaven Cadets scored early to take the lead, Dartmouth soon got their forwards creating good quick ball and after sustained pressure Butterfingers Dimblad '97 ran in a try and Pete 'I can kick - really' Martin '97 converted. Army responded in quick military fashion and jumped out of their hasty entrenchments to take the lead again. With ten minutes left to play, however, Dartmouth scored the final points of the game with a fine try in the corner by Craig 'Damn, I'm good' Whitmer '97. The final minutes were intense, but Army was unable to rally when their radio operator informed them that they were simply too far away from Firebase Charlie for an effective artillery strike. Collateral damage was kept to a minimum and the score was to remain 22-22. The DRFC, now 5-1-1 on the season, plays Brown at Homecoming next weekend in a league match.
