Something to Rally Around

By James S. Panero | Wednesday, October 23, 1996

It is with sad regret that I realize the Indian symbol will never return to Dartmouth in any official capacity within the current political atmosphere. It's in my heart. It's in the hearts of many students and proud alumni. But the current Dartmouth administration will never have the guts to bring the symbol back — even if they believed in it. So this paper throws its support to the new mascot search.

The students leading the search are all college athletes. They are also pragmatists, and just want some kind of tangible mascot to rally around at games. As of now, all symbols are banned from team jerseys except for 'the Big Green.' They want banners at games, a mascot running around the stands. They want what most schools already have.

This paper will always support the Dartmouth Indian. The Dartmouth Review will continue to hand out free Indian T-shirts to freshmen and sell Indian canes to seniors. With a new mascot, we would not have to choose between the Indian and something else — it would mean the Indian and something else. Yale teams are both the Bulldogs and the Elis. Many schools have more than one symbol.

Someday the Indian symbol will officially return, but until then give the Dartmouth teams something to rally around.
