Dean of the College Lee Pelton:On Life at DartmouthDean Lee Pelton: My responsibilities are most of the areas outside of the classroom. Dining services is not one of them, but the advising program, the class dean program, residential life, and housing are all part of my responsibilities. The Legacy of Dean Lee PeltonDean Pelton has an outstanding academic record. After receiving his B.A. magna cum laude at Wichita State University he moved on to Harvard to pursue a Ph.D. in English and American Literature. After completing his doctoral work, he stayed on in Cambridge, holding a succession of academic and administrative positions. The Puritans Are BackThe United States is going through an astonishing wave of puritanism. The new-wave Puritans are trying to get the sinners to stop sinning. In 17th century Salem, Ma., the hanging judges figured they were trying to save souls. The contemporary Puritans, whose no. 1 target is tobacco, apparently are trying to save bodies. Stay Out of New YorkThe coming of nice weather to New York City coincides with the city's invasion by millions of screaming Midwestern tourists and trashy elementary-school groups. However, during this season one finds an otherwise buried sense of camaraderie among those who live here. The only time New Yorkers are nice to one another is when the tourists are involved. The only people who like the tourists are the muggers. Indian Track dominant at PennThe men's and women's track teams enjoyed a pair of fabulously successful meets at the Penn Relays and the Dartmouth Invitational this weekend. The success achieved at those two meets positions Datrmouth well for next week's Heptagonal Championships, the season's culminating event. What Price Marcellus Wiley? This past Saturday, Marcellus Wiley, a defensive end from Columbia and the most talented player to come out of the Ivy League in recent years, was drafted in the second round by the Buffalo Bills with the 46th overall pick. The story of Wiley deserves consideration because it indicates that Ivy League institutions may well be willing to subvert existing academic standards in favor of advanced athletic accomplishment. Katharine Graham: A Real Feminist; Emily Trinks Reviews 'Personal History'Katharine Graham is my new hero. She toppled a president and built a media empire. She raised her children by herself and made The Washington Post a newspaper to be reckoned with. Her memoirs found their way onto best-seller lists. She befriended politicians and celebrities and was known in many circles as "the most powerful woman in America." Marcus Garvey Meets M.C. Hammer: Review of 'Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk'Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk is a dance show whose fundamental feature is the reconciliation of two markedly different dance styles, hip-hop and tap. It is the creation of Savion Glover (also its star), who came to international prominence in the mid-eighties as the world's foremost tap dancer. |
Interview With the DeanIn my interview with Dean Pelton, I actually got to meet him one-on-one. And in all fairness, I must say that my initial impressions of him were completely wrong. I found him to be an honest, thoughtful man who genuinely cares about students. He listened to what we had to say, and when we asked him a question, he answered it thoughtfully and truthfully. I even found myself liking Dean Pelton by the end of the hour.
