Indians Roll Over Cornell

By James Mills | Wednesday, October 15, 1997

The Saturday game, the first game of the season, was a great first game for the '01s. Not only did two young '01s muster the courage to rush the field, but the Indians put on a great show with the come from behind win against Cornell, 24-20.

The Indians now stand at the top of the Ivies with a 2-0 conference record and are 3-0 overall. The win against Cornell extended Dartmouth's winning streak to 20.

In the first quarter, tailback Dylan Karczewski '99 scored the opening touchdown with a 10-yard run behind a powerful Indian line. During the second quarter, Quarterback Peter Sellers '98 started a drive with a pair of throws to wideouts Ken Bollens '98 for 17 yards and Mike Poncy '00 for 16 yards. Unfortunately the offense wasn't able to capitalize on these good plays and had to settle for a field goal opportunity bringing in kicker Dave Regula '98. Regula knocked in a field goal to make the score 10-0, in the process breaking the Ivy League career field goals record.

After the Regula field goal, Cornell began a furious comeback. The Big Red's offense unleashed a 5-play, 38-yard scoring drive, that ended with a touchdown bring the score to 10-7. Just before half-time the Indians coughed up the ball at midfield and Hood completed 5 passes to take Cornell down to the Indians 13-yard line. The Indians were unable to prevent the score.

Early in the third quarter, cornerback Tom Reusser '00 turned the game's momentum back to Dartmouth's advantage, picking off a pass and streaking 21 yards into the end-zone. In the fourth quarter, Cornell quarterback Scott Carroll completed five passes on an 8-play, 80-yard attack into the end zone. Cornell regained the lead, 20-17, but the Indians answered back. On second and one at the Cornell 22, Sellers threw a 22-yard touchdown to Zach Ellis '98, giving Dartmouth the final lead, 24-20.

Men's Soccer

The Dartmouth Indians traveled out to California this past weekend to do battle against the Stanford Cardinal. In a game marred with numerous yellow cards and 50 fouls, the Indians played a hard game against the 11th ranked Cardinal. Although the match was brutal, no one got even close to scoring. The Cardinal outshot the Indians 14-11, but Dartmouth goalie Matt Nyman '99 only had to make two saves for his fourth shutout this year.

Women's Soccer

The women's soccer team continues to step up its play. Dartmouth, 3-1 in the Ivies, took on Cornell at home. The Indians outran and generally outplayed the opposing Big Red. Melissa Roth '00 scored the first goal midway through the second period. Just 10 minutes later, Jen Murray '01 clinched the win with a blast that found the corner of the net. The Indians outshot the Big Red 15-6 and goalie Kristen Luckenbill '01 collected her second consecutive shutout.

Women's Volleyball

After losing in the finals of the Dartmouth Invitational last Saturday, the Indians' volleyball play stepped back up. On Saturday they played Cornell, winning 15-8,15-5, and 15-2. Emily Halleback '99 led the team in kills with 12. Danra Kazenksi '99 dominated the net and Janna Merryfield '00 and Anne Murray '00 also had seven kills apiece. On Friday Dartmouth defeated the Columbia squad in three straight games, 15-4, 15-5 and 15-7.
