College to Alter Greek System; Kegs RestrictedDartmouth's Greek system may soon be altered beyond recognition. Safety and Security patrolling the halls, guest lists at the doors, and bartenders in the basements could be the norm at all Fraternity functions, if the recently released alcohol policy recommendations of the College Committee on Alcohol and Other Drugs is implemented by Dean of the College Lee Pelton. False Claims? The Legal Argument of the Drug-Free Schools and Communities ActWhat Does the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act of 1990 require of Institutes of Higher Learning? As a result of the Act becoming law, the Department of Education adopted an internal set of procedures for doling out federal funds — conditioning federal funding on the "adoption and implementation of a Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention program." The Wonder Years: Christopher Pearson Reviews 'Ronald Reagan'During Reagan's two terms in office, most mainstream economists and political scientists objected to nearly every aspect of his administration. The three major networks aired daily segments decrying the "greed" of the Reagan era. Time Magazine decided Gorbachev, not Reagan, was really behind the fall of Communism and declared the Russian Man of the Decade. An Interview With Dinesh D'SouzaDinesh D'Souza: There are two. Ten years ago, Reagan stood at the Brandenburg Gate and said 'Mr. Gorbachev, take this wall down.' Very few people at that time thought the wall would come down, but it did. So ten years later, I began to see the eighties as an extremely important decade in which pivotal changes took place: the taming of inflation, the economic turn-around, the beginning of the end of the Cold War. Smashing Pumpkins: Jack-O-Lantern Offense ScandalCampus reaction was predictably swift. Less than 48 hours after the publication was delivered to student rooms, there was a meeting outside the Collis Center in which minority students berated the editors of the Jack-O-Lantern, and one protestor was moved to a constant state of tears during her frenzied tirade. An anonymous student also tacked up posters in several dorms which accused Nat Rink of racism. One Mill, $55 MillionThe architect Robert Venturi submitted final plans last week for the construction of Berry Library, the $55 million extension to Baker Library funded in large part by the gift of John Berry '44. The blueprints elicited an official objection from the Faculty Design Review Committee, the group charged with overseeing construction projects on the College's campus. Bob Venturi and Postmodernism: An Interview with Roger KimballRoger Kimball: The important thing to understand about Venturi is that he has instantiated post-modernism perhaps more adroitly, more cunningly than almost any other architect. Philip Johnson once said that post-modernism installs the giggle into architecture. From Bauhaus to OuthouseDartmouth College should not have chosen the architectural firm Venturi Scott-Brown to design a project like the Berry Library. Certainly the design team of Robert Venturi and his wife, Denise Scott-Brown, has gained notoriety over the past few decades, but it's been for the wrong reasons. Venturi Scott-Brown specializes in post-modernism, a style of architecture that, simply put, takes the ornaments of past styles (neo-classical, georgian, modern, etc.) and mixes them together. Why is Vermont so Left?To the extent that anyone in the rest of the nation pays any attention to Vermont, the Green Mountain State must be puzzling. Letter From 'President Pelton': A SatireThe sweeping reforms of the College's alcohol policy instituted in 1991 and 1997 have proved complete failures. Despite the fact that the national drinking age has been lowered to eighteen (18), this Committee still determines it legally imperative that steps be taken, immediately, just in case legislators change their minds, to combat the still-rampant problem of heavy episodic drinking — now defined as having one (1) beer in any one (1) sitting in any one (1) year. Indians Split Lions and CrimsonOn Homecoming, Harvard dominated the Dartmouth defense and halted the offense to hand the Indians their first shutout in 10 years, 24-0. Harvard came to town with an identical winning record, but quickly demonstrated the superiority of both their offense and defense jumping to a 24-0 lead by the end of the second quarter. |
Letter From Cook AuditoriumIndividual houses will be called upon to come up with specific plans to keep underage students from drinking. Most outrageously, Safety and Security officers will replace the peers who currently monitor fraternity and sorority parties, and will be given unprecedented and unjust powers to enter any Greek house on a whim and conduct whatever search missions they deem reasonable — a latter day writs of assistance. Review Statement: Regarding E. Davis BrewerAt 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at Grafton County Superior Court, Judge Edward J. Fitzgerald III sentanced E. Davis Brewer to six months in the House of Corrections commencing November 24 at 9 a.m. He also assessed Brewer a $500 fine payable on that date. Brewer, a former Editor-in-Chief of The Dartmouth Review, had pled guilty to the theft of some $7300 from the weekly newspaper.
