Princeton: Buying the Best?On January 24, Princeton's Board of Trustees gave final approval to a budget committee's recommendations that the University hopes will, according to its press release trumpeting the changes, 'significantly increase Princeton's affordability for lower and middle-income students,' dissuading them from the 'major state universities' they might otherwise choose. Brown: Bought By the Rest?In the February issue of Vanity Fair, Janet Conant asked why Brown has become a haven for the offspring of the exclusively moneyed. She came to the conclusion apparent even to a slow-witted chambermaid — Brown needs the cash. Michael, Sonny, and SkiingIt is extraordinary to have had two such prominent skiing deaths recently, Michael Kennedy and Sonny Bono. But the fact of the matter is that there is almost no excuse for even an injury in modern recreational skiing, even if you want to go pretty fast and on expert trails. Headlocks and Handcuffs: Safety, or Brutality? The following is an affidavit filed by Brian de Moya '00 with Dartmouth College Safety and Security detailing incidents that occured on the night of January 31. It was widely circulated through campus on e-mail, and, in response to student outrage, Dean of the College Lee Pelton has convened a panel to investigate the charges. de Moya is currently considering legal action. Dorrance and Old-time CarnivalsThe 1920s were the golden years of Dartmouth skiing. With men like John Carleton, Dick Bowler, and Charles Proctor skiing for the College in the 1920s, Dartmouth both dominated racing and exhibited terrifically innovative skiing style. At the 1920 Carnival, for example, Dartmouth swept all nine outdoor events, blowing away all the competition, including the hated Harvard Crimson. Winter Carnival Schedule of Events5:00 P.M. The Princeton University men's basketball (18-1, 6-0 Ivy) team showed why they were ranked in the national top 10 after they decimated the Dartmouth basketball team (6-14, 3-5 Ivy) 71-39. The loss marked the end of a three game winning streak for Dartmouth. Point/Counterpoint: The DRA Drag BallThis Saturday, the Dartmouth Rainbow Alliance (DRA) is sponsoring it's annual drag ball. For those of you who missed it, the DRA posted a description of last year's "tintillating" event. |
Something Less: Princeton and Financial AidPrinceton's governors are in perpetual quagmire: they strive for intellectual viability and social supremacy, but they are locked forever in New Jersey. (A dreadful eight-hour train odyssey from New York last winter has left me with the indelible impression of Princeton — the town you have to go through Newark to get to). For a couple of centuries, Princeton had a ready identity — it was the school of the southern elite, much as Yale was the New York and Chicago school and Harvard the Boston school. On Police Brutality in HanoverAs he stood on a landing, he heard an S&S officer shout out, and the next thing he knew he was being slammed against a concrete wall by a Hanover Police Officer. The officer pressed him against the ground shouting obscenities in his ear, threatening to Mace him.
