Saturday Night: Revel in Structured Options

The initiative, launched on February 9, 1999, is designed to promote new social/residential options and to discourage use of Dartmouth's dominant social option, its fraternity and sorority system. The College has invested a great deal of time and effort towards changing these student lives, towards shaping students' social behaviors into different forms than they had previously taken.

Orientation 2000: Thanks for Sharing

There was a video of the event. Could Mr. Scholer watch it? Only parts of it, we were told. He couldn't record names. His notes would be reviewed before he could leave. Later, a list of names was found, but, instead of disclosing the names of students who had performed at a public event, Dean Roland Davis decided that each needed to be contacted individually to give permission.

The CIDE Report: Diversity or Bust

The newest addition to Dartmouth's family of initiatives, the Report of the Committee on Institutional Diversity and Equity does for a liberal education what the SLI did for the traditional social system.

Your Guide to the SLI

The Student Life Initiative (SLI) first came to public light on February 9, 1999, when Dartmouth President James Wright and Dartmouth's Board of Trustees announced a set of five principles around which they would shape the future social and residential life of the College.

Courses of Note: Dartmouth Course Guide to Freshmen

None of the following courses have prerequisites. We provide here course reviews of a few of the introductory courses you are likely to consider, and a few smaller, upper-level courses that have met with consistently excellent reviews over the past few years.

Songs of Dartmouth

Below is a selection of songs of which the present College administration does not approve but which were sung by generations of Dartmouth students before us. Many of these songs were banned or altered because they were deemed to be out of step with the sensitivities of today.

Can Emo Go Pop? Two New Albums: Stefan Beck Reviews 'Bleed American' and 'Owls LP'

Last winter, at Maxwell's in Hoboken, New Jersey, I had the privilege of speaking with a very drunk Tim Kinsella, front-man of the legendary Chicago emo and math-rock outfits Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, Tim Kinsellas, and, most recently, Owls.

Letters to the Editor

Approximately two years ago, some clown(s) in your management decided to eliminate the Letters to the Editor page (or half-page) on the inside front cover—an utterly stupid decision. This section was the one sure forum where your readers could express their politically incorrect but sound and truthful views.

Administrative Musical Chairs

The Committee on Institutional Diversity and Equity, once known as the World Cultures Initiative Committee before a typical power-grab, released its report 'suggest[ing] actions that Dartmouth could take to become a more inclusive, pluralistic and interactive learning community' (see page 9). Unsurprisingly, Dartmouth President James Wright announced just several weeks later in mid-July that the College will 'immediately implement' three of the report's 'major initiatives' (what happened to "suggestions"?).

Good ... But Great?

Dean of the College Jim Larimore awarded the Milton Sims Kramer Group Award to MOSAIC, 'the student organization for biracial, bicultural, multiracial, and multicultural individuals.' The award is given annually to the student group that has made the greatest contribution to the College and includes a $750 prize.
