Dartmouth's War on FunThe student body had fallen prey to the depredations of Demon Rum.The frats, like the burlesque houses and opium dens of the Barbary Coast, were the source of the problem; and Wright, a man of strategic vision, wouldn't stand for it. Miscreants on Main Street: Twenty-Three Years at The Dartmouth ReviewThe Review has remained a bulwark against social engineering beyond the Greek system, opposing the ?diversity? mandates of the expanding Dean of Plurality Empire and selling "offensive" Indian T-shirts and canes all the while. What is a College Education? It can scarcely be challenged that the United States is part of the narrative of European history. It owes little or nothing to Confucius or Laotse or to Chief Shaka or to the Aztecs. At the margin it owes a bit to the American Indians, but not a great deal — corn, tobacco, some legendary material. But Europe is overwhelmingly the source. Dartmouth Indians: The New TraditionIt should be obvious that the Indian mascot is not meant to depict present-day Native Americans, so how can this be the case? Native Americans have changed a great deal over the course of history. So have people of all ethnicities. That's why I'm studying English at Dartmouth College rather than wearing a bearskin and sacrificing holly-crowned virgins to Wotan. TDR's Western Culture PrimerWhy should we bother with a meaning of liberal education at all? Answering it means first expanding our concerns to include the state of civilized society in general. Courses of NoteWe provide here course reviews of a few of the introductory courses you are likely to consider, and a few smaller, upper-level courses that have met with consistently excellent reviews over the past few years. Dartmouth's course load can be cumbersome, between distributive requirements and classes for the major. You would do well to fill your elective schedule with courses we recommend. They are truly some of Dartmouth's best. Songs of DartmouthA selection of songs of which the present College administration does not approve but which were sung by generations of Dartmouth students before us. Many of these songs were banned or altered because they were deemed to be out of step with the sensitivities of today. Still, these songs recall the unbreakable school spirit that was once the hallmark of Dartmouth College. The Beautiful: Dartmouth's Best ProfsA score of the best profs on campus. ...And the Damned: Dartmouth's WorstEleven of the College's worse profs exposed. |
Don't Drink the Kool-AidDon't get me wrong: Dartmouth has much to offer, and can be an exhilarating learning experience—if you play your cards right. First, though, you have to learn to ignore the effusive diversity babble. Rest assured, it will be difficult. Dress as You Do in a Country HouseThe best thing about white privilege: Anybody can have it, including your black neighbor or your Hindu cousin. Beware the vocal minority around campus. Most of the students are just like you ? they even voted for Bush. Well, probably Gore; but they think America's a sensible place, and that the villains on September 11 were the terrorists, not the stockbrokers.
