The Manhattan
2 oz. Bourbon
1/2 oz. Sweet Vermouth
Angostura Bitters to taste (2-4 drops)
Combine ingredients over whatever ice is left in a fast-food cup
Several years ago, I made the foolish mistake of taking an off-term during the winter. According to the conventional wisdom, this is supposed to be a good way to stay warm. It is not. Trust me. The flaw in being off in the winter is that it invariably necessitates a long Thursday night drive up to campus for Winter Carnival.
This particular year, I was on the way up from New York with two friends, with arrangements to stay with fine a young gentleman who only drinks Manhattans. Clearly good people. The problem, however, was two-fold. First of all, they let me drive. Second, the radio started playing "Radar Love" by Golden Earring. Needless to say, I was incapable of driving through a snow storm while simultaneously shouting (it can't really be described as singing) about how "I'm speeding into a new sunrise," and, as a result, we ended up deep in a snow drift out of sight of the road. Cell phone service being what it is in Vermont, we were stuck until morning. Luckily, however, we had bought some gifts for our host, of which we immediately partook, using our fast food cups.
Early the next morning, the state police found us all unconscious, but decided to call us a tow truck anyway. The story ends well, however, as we all made it to campus in time for the keg jump.
