Willful IgnoranceBut to request that our publication be whisked away from the door before it can assault one's sensitivities is to distance oneself deliberately from ideas different from one's own. It is an attempt to expel and ignore ideas that might make one uncomfortable—a consummate display of intolerance. Wait a second, isn't tolerance what Dartmouth is all about? A Grand Opportunity for Reform: Alumni Vote for Trustee RepresentativeRodgers wrote that Dartmouth's curriculum suffers a series of gaps "not only in math and science, but also in life's basics: thinking and reasoning, writing clearly, understanding the economy—and even understanding the basic principles and history of our American Democracy." Touring the Museu de l'EroticaAs I picked up the receiver, the sultry inflections of woman's voice lapped at my ear. I had no clue what she said, but I could use my imagination, which was far preferable to the raw, guttural utterances from the English phone. As my new friend verbally caressed my ear, I drifted into a state of semi-consciousness—only to be rudely interrupted by an excited Rollo. Review UpdateAfter being evicted from its offices at Zeta Psi fraternity in the wake of a zoning board dispute with the Town of Hanover [TDR, 3/4/04], The Review prepares to move into new offices at the Campion Building on Main Street this weekend. Woe, For Hip-Hop Has Lost its SoulRailing against the "conservative, narrow-minded, up-by-your-bootstraps" commercial culture, Rose accused record corporations of engaging in "mockery for the purposes of profit." She also blamed white people as a race, claiming "white culture" had used hip-hop as a tool of denigration. Changing Fortunes of the Greek SystemOverall, the events at Phi Delt and KDE were extremely successful. The administration candidly expressed its concerns; at the same time, Greek leaders provided competing perspectives that were well-articulated and well-taken. Most came out committed to solid relationships that allow honest and open discussion regarding the concerns of both groups. Barrett's MixologyThe beauty of a homebrewed ale, you see, is that it has to be allowed to ferment, and fermentation is a beautiful thing. Last WordIf you want government to intervene domestically, you're a liberal. If you want government to intervene overseas, you're a conservative. If you want government to intervene everywhere, you're a moderate. If you don't want government to intervene anywhere, you're an extremist. Croquet League Play BeginsWarm weather, green grass, and longer days have finally returned to Hanover, and with the improved conditions, Dartmouth's nascent Croquet League will shortly begin its official season. |
Taking It SeriouslyI've had my publisher insert a small plastic strip into every issue that makes it impossible to recycle. Mr. Bateman and his crack team of environmentalists can do their best, by which I mean do their worst, for the environment. At most, they'll be able to throw the paper away and contribute to our nation's burgeoning waste problem.
