Students Fake Protest for Fake Hate Crime
Shortly before spring break, administrators at all five colleges in Claremont, California, granted students an early break by canceling classes on March 10th in response to an apparent hate crime. While it remains unclear what the administrators hoped to accomplish by canceling class, hundreds of students gave up the extra day for additional sleeping and drinking in favor of protesting the crime. The cancellation and protests both came after professor Kerri Dunn's car was vandalized as she spoke at Claremont-McKenna College at a forum on hate crimes. The forum itself was scheduled after an incident involving the defacement of a poster of George Washington Carver.
Dunn alleged that during her speech, someone smashed her windows, slashed her tires and spray-painted wrote the words "shut up," "whore" and "n——r-lover" on her car. The crime shocked the whole campus, prompting the administration to offer $10,000 for information leading to the perpetrator's arrest. According to the student government president, "never in your wildest dreams did anyone expect such a violent act to take place here."
According to police, however, it didn't. Their investigation revealed that Dunn, a white woman from Nebraska, had vandalized the car herself. When asked to comment on the charges, she simply said that "this is so overshadowing the bigger problem on campus, which is that the administration has turned its head regularly on hate speech and hate crimes."
