The Last WordThere is no greater compliment to the Jews than the fact that the degree of their unpopularity is always the scientific measure of the cruelty and silliness of the regime under which they live. I like the job. That's what I'll miss the most... I'm not sure anybody ever liked this as much as I've liked it. John Kerry has said the following on the war on terror. "I'll do it smarter. I'll do it better. I'll involve the United Nations and the international community." Well, that scares the hell out of me because the international community is a gutless bunch of decadent cowards which doesn't have the courage or the wherewithal to defend themselves. Politicians never accuse you of "greed" for wanting to take other people's money—only for wanting to keep your own money. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government. Yes, we males are a sorry lot, sinners all, and neck deep in iniquity. The shame of it bores into my soul. Now you go stand in the middle of Dupont Circle at high noon, with a pair of seven-by-fifty binoculars, and look real carefully all around, and point to one thing, with a moving part, that was invented by a radical feminist. The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries. Claret is the liquor for boys; port for men; but he who aspires to be a hero must drink brandy. Conservative, n. A statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from the liberal, who wishes to replace them with others. The worst government is the most moral. One composed of cynics is often very tolerant and humane. But when fanatics are on top there is no limit to oppression. Many bad policies are simply good policies taken too far. If the supply of virtue is insufficient in a free society like America, it is almost nonexistent in Islamic societies because coerced virtues are not virtues at all. We cannot open the mantle of republicanism to every government of laws, whether consistent or not with natural right. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage-earner by pulling down the wage-payer. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves. Bill Clinton should do very well if he becomes a daytime TV talk show host. Most of the people who voted for him are at home during the day. You do not examine legislation in the light of the benefits it will convey if properly administered, but in the light of the wrongs it would do and the harms it would cause if improperly administered. Conservative isolationism—America is too good for the world—is long dead. Liberal isolationism—the world is too good for America—is flourishing. Foreign aid might be defined as a transfer from poor people in rich countries to rich people in poor countries. It is proof of a base and low mind for one to wish to think with the masses or majority, merely because the majority is the majority. Truth does not change because it is, or is not, believed by a majority of the people. First rule in government spending: Why build one, when you can have two at twice the price? |
