Hockey

Men's Hockey, highly-touted in preseason rankings and expected to bring home the ECAC championship, is off to a shaky start with an ECAC record of 2-2, and overall 3-3. No game was more indicative of the team's woes than the 3-0 loss to Princeton, widely picked to finish last in the conference cellar. Critics point to an astonishingly high rate of turnovers thus far in the season, as well as lackluster performances from Lee Stempniak '05 and Eric Przepiorka '06.

The team is partly being carried by Dan Yacey '05's excellent goal-tending, with a saves percentage of .939 and 1.69 goals against average. Against St. Lawrence on Saturday, November 13th, he recorded 43 saves—close to a career record.

But perhaps the biggest news is the loss of Hugh Jessiman '06 to an ankle injury in the Princeton game (L 0-3) Saturday, November 7th. The New York Rangers first round draft-pick was later found to have ligament damage severe enough to warrant upcoming season-ending surgery on his leg. Although onlookers are more concerned with whether or not Jessiman will be returning for his Senior year, Jessiman explained to The New York Post, "If all goes ideally, I'll be in a walking cast for ten weeks after the operation, which will be followed by another six weeks of rehab." He continued, "I'm trying to stay positive and optimistic that there's some way I'll be able to get back for the [March] playoffs, but realistically, that's a long way down the road."

The No. 2 Dartmouth Women's Hockey Team is now 4-0-0 in the ECAC and 5-0-0 overall, and Cherie Piper '05 was recently named USCHO Division I Offensive Player of the Week. They will be playing at Colgate this Friday.

Football

The Dartmouth Football team broke its eight-game winless streak Saturday, November 13th with a devastating 20-7 win against Brown. Chad Gaudet '07 ran for 137 yards on 37 carries, and was a dominant figure in the running game. Defense played a large part in the win, and Brown's Hartigan, ranked No. 5 in the nation for rushing, was held to 65 yards on 15 carries. Hartigan's ineffectiveness forced Brown to turn to a passing game that gave the Indians' defensive line six sacks on the day. Dartmouth had not defeated the Bears since 1997. The win came on Senior Day, and the last game of the season will be at Princeton Saturday, November 20th. Combining strong defense and their newfound rusher in Gaudet, prospects look high entering this weekend's game.
