An aimless wanderlust combined with the prospect of a grand jury indictment had forced me to seek refuge elsewhere and, Anglophile that I am, I settled down at Oxford to finish up on my D.Phil in Oriental Languages. However, urgent business summoned me from the depths of the Bodleian to the West Coast for the weekend, and I figured my complexion could use the sun. To my dismay, my days were spent in a wood-paneled boardroom at undisclosed location, eating delectable three-course meals and sipping gin and tonics≠—as if I had never left Oxford.
In search of adventure, an old school chum of mine joined me to traipse around Haight-Ashbury, epicenter of the so-called "hippie" movement. The aforementioned gin and tonics sent me in search of the facilities, but against all expectations and avowed principles, the lavatory at the People's CafÈ was "For Customer Use Only." However, the kind staff at the Buffalo Exchange informed us of a nearby bar. This fine establishment possessed the same policy, but I was more than willing to join their long-haired clientele. Luckily, I scribbled down the ingredients of my delightfully fruity ticket to the bathroom before I headed off to the Castro district, from which I emerged the next day with a strange phone number on my hand in distinctively masculine script.
