Baseball Disappoints

Monday, May 9, 2005

Baseball finished a tough season this past week, dropping three games of a four-game series to Harvard. The Crimson took the first game 10-6, but the Indians rebounded for the second half of the doubleheader to win 8-5. However, Harvard went on to sweep the second doubleheader in a pair of close games, 9-8 and 11-10.

This has been a tough year for the Dartmouth baseball team to say the least. It has been mostly frustrating and disappointing, especially with such high expectations coming into the season. The Ivy League baseball season boils down to five weekends, twenty games, and the smallest mistake can change the entire season. It seemed as though this year the team was on the wrong side of the small mistakes. Next year's team will benefit from the experience and awareness that every inning of every game counts. This year the team could have and probably should have won several one or two-run games, games that make the difference between disappointing and successful seasons.

After finishing a disappointing 8-12 in the Ivy League this year, the team will be stronger next year with all of its starting pitchers returning. With junior third baseman Tommy Myette back in the batting order and several strong hitters among the rising somphomores, the lineup will have a strong foundation. Combined with a strong recruiting class, the team should bounce back from this past year. Next year, with luck, the team will be back in contention for the Ivy League title.
