Teevens '79 Re-Ignites FootballBy Michael Fritz | Monday, May 9, 2005 This past winter, Buddy Teevens '79 arrived on campus as the new head coach of Dartmouth Football, to bring championship college football back to Hanover. Coach Teevens set a fast pace for the upcoming year, with morning runs three times a week. While some coaches did not show up to morning runs in the past, with Teevens at the helm the entire staff participates. Under Coach Teevens's new system, expectations are clear. Each coach mans a station during practices, and while each station lasts only a few minutes, the coach demands the most from each and every player for those minutes. Often times these few minutes can seem like an eternity, and each station is equipped with a trashcan for those who push themselves beyond the limits of their breakfast. After each workout, the team rallies around Coach Teevens. Despite making these morning workouts harder than ever, the coaching staff has earned the respect of the team. This mindset has carried over into spring practice. Each player knows that they have to come ready to play at every practice. Teevens accepts nothing less and this demanding regimen should result in success on the field this fall. Coach Teevens is determined to have a winning team on and off the field. He encourages players to participate in community service and emphasizes success in the classroom. Not only is there athletic competition amongst players at each position, there is now academic competition. The player at each position with the highest GPA receives special recognition from the team. Everyone is optimistic about next season and the years to come. Teevens's winning record as a player and coach for the Indians is about to be extended with what could be one of the greatest turnarounds in Ivy League history. |
