Football Looks Forward to HomecomingBy Michael Fritz | Friday, October 21, 2005 Dartmouth football fell short once again last weekend, losing to Holy Cross by a score of 28-16. Holy Cross is still undefeated in the Patriot League, boasting a 5-2 record overall. The Crusaders came out of the gate with all pistons firing on Saturday and jumped out to a 28-0 lead by halftime. However, Dartmouth's men saw an opportunity open up when Holy Cross fumbled the opening kick-off of the second half. Freshman quarterback Josh Cohen had a chance to revive Dartmouth's struggling offense, but failed to take advantage of the favorable field position. It was not until the fourth quarter that Dartmouth's offensive was able to start moving the ball with any efficacy. The offense gained 218 yards in the fourth quarter, compared to a mere 100 yards in the first three quarters combined. At the start of the final quarter, senior linebacker Josh Dooley sacked the Crusader quarterback on fourth down, giving Dartmouth the ball deep in their own territory. Cohen proceeded to lead the Indians down the field with confidence on the ensuing drive, connecting with tight end Sam Seiberling '06 on a nine-yard touchdown pass. On the next series, Dartmouth's defense held the Crusaders to a quick three and out, and Dartmouth regained the ball on their own six-yard line. After a quick sixteen-yard pass to Ryan Fuselier '06 and a forty-seven-yard strike to freshman Eric Paul, Dartmouth was threatening to score for the second time. With four minutes left in the game, Cohen connected with Fuselier for his second touchdown pass. The two-point conversion made the score 28-14 and put Dartmouth within two scores of a victory and giving hope to the Indian faithful. With momentum on their side, Dartmouth recovered a well-placed on-side kick by Eric Hinterbichler '06. Cohen drove the offense down to the Holy Cross twenty-three yard line, but had his pass intercepted on fourth down. With only fifty-eight seconds left on the clock and no time-outs remaining, Dartmouth was forced to accept defeat. A last-second safety by Dartmouth made the final score 28-16. Dartmouth's loss last Saturday brought its record to 1-4 with its only victory coming in the team's first game against Colgate. The team will have a chance to redeem itself this week when it faces Columbia for Homecoming. Both teams will be looking for their first Ivy League victory, as Columbia is 2-3 on the season thus far, having fallen to the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton in league play.
