Hockey Upsets Cornell in First Win

After a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Colgate which left them with an 0-4 record, the men's hockey team needed a boost to get back into winning form. That boost arrived in a most unlikely opponent—Cornell, an Eastern College Athletic Conference Hockey League rival ranked #3 nationally. In the course of two hours in Thompson Arena on November 12, the Indians dismantled the Big Red 6-1.

Dartmouth opened the scoring 9:49 into the first period on the power play after Cornell goaltender, David McKee, deflected a shot to Dartmouth forward Tanner Glass, who slammed it home. Cornell followed five minutes later with a power play goal of its own. Then, however, the Dartmouth offense began to roll. With approximately four minutes remaining in the first period, freshman Ryan Bellows scored his first collegiate goal. This was quickly followed by a Dan Shribman goal which closed the scoring for the period.

The Indians continued their scoring rampage in the second period, with Nick Johnson and Eric Przepiorka scoring power play goals early, making the score 5-1. After Przepiorka's tally, Cornell coach Mike Schafer did the unprecedented, pulling his goalie McKee, a Hobey Baker Award finalist, for the first time in his collegiate career, in favor of senior Lewis Chabot. Chabot fared better, but could not stop Dartmouth's Johnson from scoring the game's final tally, short-handed, with 4:46 remaining in the second. It was the first time in 4 years that Cornell had allowed a half-dozen goals in a game.

Cornell came out stronger in the third period, taking eleven shots on goal to Dartmouth's four. But they could not again solve Indian goaltender Mike Devine, who saved 19 shots on the way to his second career win. Dartmouth hopes to use this invigorating win to spark a turnaround in the season's fortunes; that journey will start when they face Brown and Yale November 18-19 at home, followed by a road series in the North Country versus Clarkson and St. Lawrence the following weekend.
