Alumni Association Votes SundayThe famed warmth of the Dartmouth community’s camaraderie has continued to chill since the October 23 defeat of D. Dean Spatz ‘66, Joe Asch ‘79, and other petition candidates in Alumni Association elections. Despite a concerted effort to the contrary, the majority of alumni voters present in Hanover (many culled from the ranks of the administration-friendly Alumni Council), rejected the increased budget transparency and electronic voting pledges of “outsider candidates” like Spatz and Asch. A Short History of Winter CarnivalWinter Carnival began as a tradition of the Dartmouth Outing Club ninety-six years ago to invite nearby college students to compete against Dartmouth’s best skiers. The celebration took on its official name the following year, and the spirit of athleticism and competition has since remained, along with other social festivities that promptedNational Geographic magazine to call it “the Mardi Gras of the North.” Cultural Revolution at Zoo Mass?Creating, offering, and/or engaging in drinking games or other behaviors designed for the purpose of rapid and/or excessive consumption is prohibited. A Williamsburg Cookbook: Soviet GumboIt’s oft said that you aren’t a “true” resident of Williamsburg until you hang out with (or at least clean up after) a stripper. I considered this my entrée into the wide world of “cred” and discounted cover charges. TDR 25: Delhi, Deliverance, & DartmouthIn the balkanized and Orwellian world of Dartmouth in the late 1980s, the only place that I experienced complete meritocracy and egalitarianism was on the staff of the Review. Drinkin' Like A Dartmouth ManWinter Carnival is upon us, and for many Dartmouth students, Carnival is a weekend for skiing, skating, and snow sculpting. As you can read in Alana Finley’s history of Carnival on the opposite page, the holiday initially began as purely hibernal celebration but soon evolved into its current and slightly more degenerate form.
