Here I was, again. It seemed like years, but I was at a campus debate, yet again. The last time I had attended an event of that type, I almost returned in a body bag. There were the College Republicans. They were an attractive organization, offering campus exposure and prestige to those that would go where normal members would not: Hinman Forum, arguing against the views of leftist-inclined Dartmouth students. Now, their views were not that difficult to grasp; surely, they were reasonable. But this time, things were different. I sat with my slice of EBA’s pizza listening on as the Republicans and Democrats debated on energy issues. With every one-liner delivered by the blinded, freshmen recruits, I could see a better joke. This does not mean I would have the audacity to deliver, but still.... Nevertheless, the preschoolers continued to play in the sandbox, building castles of sand, sans any substance whatsoever. The point of this debate was neither enrichment nor learning, and despite Professor Shaiko’s guarantees to the contrary (“Very good response”), I just couldn’t understand their points without nearly a pint of this magical brew. It protected Wagner from the persecution of the Nuremberg trials, yet it could never have been prepared for the wrath of angry neoconservatives led by Rahul Sanguwan ‘07.
