The Grand Old SeniorsThe following is The Dartmouth Review's annual tribute to our departing seniors. AoA Execs Cancel ElectionsEditor's Note: Reproduced here is the letter sent by Merle Adelman '80, first vice president of the Association of Alumni, announcing the executive committee's decision to unconstitutionally forego the planned October elections for new officers, in light of the upcoming constitution vote. ACTA Criticizes Executives' ActionEditor's Note: This letter was sent to Al Collins, President of the Association of Alumni, by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni imploring him to rescind the officers’ decision. Also receiving carbon copies of the letter were James Wright, Merle Adelman, Joe Stevenson, the AGTF Chairman, and Bill Neukom, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Evelyn Waugh Revisited: Of Dickens, Gibbons, and CatholicismWaugh converted to Roman Catholicism in 1930. There is no doubt that in his own eyes this was the single most important fact in his life, but if one confines oneself to matters of literary importance, a fact may rank for the biographer more or less highly than it does or did for the subject of the biography. Church and State at DartmouthThose at Dartmouth who objected to Mr. Riner's obeisance to Jesus acted as though he were bent on repealing the First Amendment. It wasn't as if he had been appealing to restore Dartmouth's original charter — which called for Christianizing the Indians. Riner '06 Welcomes the Class of 2009My purpose in mentioning the horrible things done by certain people on the Gulf Coast isn't to condemn just them; rather it's to condemn all of us. The Charge of the AcademyThere's a sizeable chunk of the student body for whom college means an opportunity to pony up tens of thousands to prevent the Bible-thumpin', holy water-tossin', ice cream social-hostin' crazies from lurching out of Jesusland. The Laurelled Sons of DartmouthService is one of the oldest and proudest traditions of Dartmouth College. From Antietam to Khe Sanh, the sons of Dartmouth have proudly fought for their nation and continue to do so today. TDR Celebrates 25 YearsThe Review had gone too far in its criticism of college policies "so that other people will feel compelled to go far enough." Why Won't the Faculty Stay?No administrator ever attended the class nor reviewed any of the student work. A week later the Dean of Faculty informed the students that anyone unhappy with their grade could have it erased and be given a 'credit' for the course. Theatre Professor Sues CollegeSabinson alleges that Professor Margaret Spicer "said she knew of the threats and advised her to 'go to California and find yourself a nice rabbi'" Towns Weigh Tubestock ChangesDrinking will not stop simply because a Norwich selectman decides it should. Towns Plot to Kill TubestockDartmouth has declined to have any responsibility for the event given the danger it poses and the illegal alcohol consumption that typically happens during the event. McKinsey Delivers Report on AdministrationMcKinsey conducted inquiries and studies on campus, focusing on administrative communication, resourcing allocation, and adherence to the mission and purpose of Dartmouth College. Athletic Facilities Receive UpgradesPrior to the construction of Baker Library it was once said that Dartmouth was the only college with a gymnasium larger than its library. Thankfully, over the last century the College’s priorities have changed and it now boasts an even larger library network that sprawls across campus. Dartmouth Rugby: 2006 Ivy League ChampsThe Dartmouth Rugby Football Club won their second Ivy League Title in as many years. A History of Dartmouth IndiansThe Indian mascot remained synonymous with Dartmouth for over a century until the Board of Trustees unilaterally called for its end. Dartmouth's Olympic HeroesThis year, Dartmouth continued its long tradition of sending athletes to compete in the winter Olympics. A total of fourteen Dartmouth athletes went to Turin to compete in four sports, representing four different countries and winning a total of five medals. Indian Hockey Wins Conference TitleThis year’s Dartmouth hockey team knows how to perform under pressure. The team’s first league win came four games into the regular season with a blistering 6–1 victory over Cornell, then ranked number three in the nation. gordon haff's last wordMy prayer to God is a very short one: “O Lord, make my enemies ridiculous.” God has granted it. Barrett's MixologySnakebite 2 oz. Canadian Whiskey Serve in Old Fashioned glass over ice with prudent regard for career implications. |
Not in Our North Country. As the Sons and Daughters of Dartmouth stumble groggily out of the sleep-deprived haze wrought by final exams to wrap up another academic cycle at our hollowed institution, a cursory reflection reminds us that the most contentious issues of the year seemed not to come from amongst the undergraduates, but rather from the ranks of her alumni.
