Barrett's MixologyBy Jared W. Zelski | Thursday, March 1, 2007 Poison Apple 1 oz. Vodka Mix with ice in shaker. Shake and pour into glass. I found myself, once again, passing time in solitude in my cabin in the Still North. I was sitting fireside, strumming my guitar and gently singing when I heard a delicate knock on the cabin door. I opened the door and a brisk wind entered the room. Alas! It was Matthias. I had not seen him for nine months, since I was last in Marburg. He bore only a small sack, whose contents I could not decipher. I prayed him enter, and he did with the most amicable gratitude. We sat comfortably by the warmth of the glowing stove fire, reminiscing about lost friends and good times, when he suggested we mark our reunion with a toast. I cheerfully acquiesced in his proposal and quickly foraged the cabin for a suitable libation. When I returned with a meager bottle of vodka, my companion rightfully cringed. It was then that he reached into his sack and revealed the most beautiful bottle my eyes have ever laid sight on—a glass bottle of the sweetest German apple liqueur, truly a gift from the heavens. He frugally poured some vodka into each of our glasses as I remained entranced by the pristine bottle of apfelkorn. He opened it and slowly poured some of the foreign nectar into each glass. I grabbed my glass and quickly exclaimed, “Cheers!” as my companion warmly responded with “Prost!”. I say, I never had nor ever will experience such a delight as that concoction, in which we aptly indulged for the remainder of that cold, winter night. |
