Gordon Haff's The Last WordBy Compiled by Nisanth Reddy | Saturday, December 8, 2007 Impunity, n. – wealth Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former. Buy land. They’ve stopped making it. The reason why worry kills more people than work is that more people worry than work. A person will sometimes devote all his life to the development of one part of his body - the wishbone. Watch what people are cynical about, and one can often discover what they lack. Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes. My experience has taught me that a man who has no vices has damned few virtues. I never know what I think about something until I read what I’ve written on it. To find out a girl’s faults, praise her to her girl friends.
I took a test in Existentialism. I left all the answers blank and got 100. Insanity in individuals is something rare -- but in groups, parties, nations, and epochs it is the rule.
I only drink to make other people seem interesting. I believe in equality for everyone, except reporters and photographers. Personality can open doors, but only character can keep them open. A person reveals his character by nothing so clearly as the joke he resents. Men show their characters in nothing more clearly than in what they think laughable. We did not change as we grew older; we just became more clearly ourselves. It’s not that some people have willpower and some don’t. It’s that some people are ready to change and others are not. You can take all the sincerity in Hollywood, place it in the navel of a firefly and still have room enough for three caraway seeds and a producer’s heart. He who reigns within himself and rules his passions, desires, and fears is more than a king. He who does not know how to be silent will not know how to speak. We all learn by experience but some of us have to go to summer school. |
