By Hillary Rhoadeham ‘69 | Monday, May 19, 2008

1 part Kentucky bourbon
2 parts water
Sugar
Freshly cut mint sprigs
Crushed Ice

Crush mint and combine with sugar and water. Pour bourbon, add ice. Garnish with mint as desired. Imbibe.

I had always imagined Hanover to be a frozen wasteland, the grim home of the roisterous men of Dartmouth. Yet today the weather was warm, and a gentle wind blew across my face as I gazed across the Dartmouth campus, as verdant as Wellesley’s, from whence I came. The Green wasn’t the only verdant thing, I realized days later—but at the time, I was content. The rich aroma of bourbon brought me back to my senses. I turned my attention back to the croquet match taking place, and was startled by a solicitous tap at my shoulder. It was Beau, his free hand tightly gripping the wooden croquet mallet. “How about another?” he inquired. I repressed a secret smile and lowered my eyes modestly. He pushed another drink into my hand, and I must admit, the mint was refreshing. Thus refreshed—I had lost count at five—my eyes struggled to follow Beau as he strode across the Green. Despite my drowsiness I noticed he was talking to one of his many handsome classmates. That must be Robert. I was glad the wind and yes, perhaps the libations had brought an appealing glow to my cheeks as I smiled brightly at them both. We locked eyes. I hardly knew what was happening; I was in love! Turning our backs to Baker Library, leaving behind my beloved brother Beau, Robert and I walked westward into the setting sun. I didn’t care what was real. It was Green Key.
