Yesterday evening, gawker.com released an article exposing blitzes sent in an unintentionally public e-mail forum between brothers of Dartmouth’s Beta Alpha Omega fraternity. From sink night hazing rituals to blitzes demeaning women, Gawker published it all before Beta managed to make their gmail blitz group “private.”
However, what shocks me more than any of the offensive material exposed by Gawker, which is benign compared to many fraternity stereotypes, is that many Dartmouth students managed to fall under the spell of Beta’s feigned “southern gentleman” image before the article was released. Born and raised in New Orleans, I can assure readers that there are few things southern about Beta.
