Dean Johnson to Depart Dartmouth

At a little after 10:00 this morning, President Hanlon informed the Dartmouth community that Dean Charlotte Johnson will be departing for the position of Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Scripps College in California. The text of the email reads:

To the Dartmouth community,

I’m writing to share the news that Dean of the College Charlotte Johnson has accepted the position of vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Scripps College, the women’s college within the Claremont University Consortium in Claremont, Calif.

In this new position, Charlotte will not only oversee student affairs but will also have the opportunity to teach and work with Scripps’ president to create a student leadership center. With this move, Charlotte will be closer to family members in California.

Charlotte is a steadfast leader and thoughtful colleague. During her tenure, advising services for first- and second-year students have been expanded, an innovative advising program is being piloted and Dartmouth has a new undergraduate-advising center. Access to mental health support at Dick’s House has greatly improved and late-night programming activities grew under the expansion of the Collis Center and the new Sarner Underground, a 24/7 social space for students. Under Charlotte’s leadership, we have also begun to re-envision residential life at Dartmouth, with several new living/learning communities coming on in the fall, and other innovations in residential life under consideration.

Never afraid to tackle hard issues, Charlotte led a three-year decline in high blood alcohol content emergency cases, created the Center for Community Action and Prevention, which will open in the fall, and instituted the Dartmouth Bystander Initiative to prevent sexual assault.

I have greatly enjoyed working with Charlotte over the last year. Her commitment and energy for building a safe and inclusive community at Dartmouth have never wavered, nor has her optimism and sense of humor. She will leave Dartmouth stronger than when she arrived.

It is with a sense of deep gratitude that I offer my congratulations on this new opportunity, and hope you will join me in wishing Charlotte the very best in this next chapter of her life.
