On Saturday, September 23, Dartmouth beat Lehigh 38-17. The game marked Dartmouth’s first victory of the season and the College’s first game since the passing of football coach Eugene F. “Buddy” Teevens ’79.
Dartmouth began by receiving the ball and got off to a good start. Long runs and successful passes led to a long drive.
A false-start call on senior Isaac Boston was quickly negated by a huge run from junior Q Jones, allowing for a conversion on downs in spite of five extra yards tacked on by the penalty. Unfortunately, the ball was quickly fumbled, recovered by Lehigh, and returned for a touchdown. Luckily, Dartmouth was able to score a touchdown on the next drive thanks to a QB sneak from senior Nick Howard. The first quarter ended 7-7.
Lehigh’s first real drive of the game was quickly stymied. The Big Green went on to receive the Mountain Hawks’ punt only to find themselves punting after an unsuccessful drive.
Dartmouth’s punt was tragically tipped and returned for an apparent Lehigh touchdown. However, the referees bailed the Big Green out of the situation with a roughing-the-kicker call, allowing Dartmouth to maintain control of the ball.
The Big Green then went on to score a field goal. After several unsuccessful drives by both teams, Lehigh managed to score a field goal and Dartmouth a touchdown. The half ended with Dartmouth in the lead, 17-10.
The third quarter was all Dartmouth. Our Big Green broke away with two touchdowns. The first was another QB sneak from Nick Howard, and the second was a run from Q Jones.
The fourth quarter was largely uneventful, although Lehigh managed to score a touchdown and Dartmouth a field goal. Sadly, Lehigh racked up a total of three injuries in the second half.
