After months of student criticism regarding changes to DDS dining plans, the closing of the river docks, administrative staffing changes, rising tuition, the President’s absence on campus, and a plethora of other issues, President Kim will be following the tradition of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and participating in a “Fireside Chat” this Tuesday afternoon. The event is sponsored by the Palaeopitus Senior Society and all questions had to be submitted by 5pm on Thursday. While the e-mail offers three possible topics for questions, my guess is most students are concerned about his controversial actions, and in much cases inaction, at Dartmouth. My biggest question is why do President Kim’s questions have to be pre-approved; and why was it necessary to submit them five days in advance?

Have questions for PRESIDENT KIM?
Ask them at Palaeopitus’ second Fireside Chat with President Jim Yong Kim!
Submit questions to “Palaeopitus” via blitz by 5pm TOMORROW, April 31st. [sic]
Possible topics for questions: President Kim’s life before Dartmouth, his perspectives
on current events and his work at Dartmouth!
President Roosevelt’s fireside chats were full of rhetoric, used as a way to gain public support for his agenda, but also as a way to encourage Americans to take certain actions, such as buying war bonds. President Kim can certainly fulfill the rhetoric requirement, but it will be interesting to see what he encourages the student body to do. Perhaps he will describe the state of Dartmouth just as Roosevelt characterized the 1933 bank crisis at the end of his first fireside chat, “It is your problem no less than it is mine. Together we cannot fail.”

Update: Shortly after this post was published yesterday, Palaeopitus changed the ‘rules’ of the highly-anticipated Fireside Chat to allow live questions from the audience. However, no word on the ratio of pre-approved to live questions, which allows for a few carefully-placed plants in the audience. Still, a victory for the truth… Looks like the tail is wagging the dog.
