Last week The New York Daily Post reported that Albert Sonnefield, the father-in-law of Timothy Geithner ’83, revealed an intriguing, though dubious, claim that Geithner will be the next president of Dartmouth.
“That’s why Obama nominated [Kim] for the World Bank — so that there’d be an opening,” exclaimed Sonnefield at a communal table at a New York City Restaurant.
Since arranging this elaborate ruse, however, Geithner apparently has had a change of heart. “They offered him the presidency of Dartmouth. But now he doesn’t want it,” revealed Sonnefield. Unfortunately, like our outgoing president, “he wants something else.”
A Geithner spokesman has flatly denied the claims, but the idea is not farfetched. A recent Dealbook article made a strong case for the idea. Geithner has very intimate ties to the College. His father, grandfather, and wife all atended Dartmouth.
