The Mega-Man

Last week, I wrote about the shutdown of Megaupload, a massive file-sharing website that helped fuel the entertainment industry’s push for SOPA and PIPA legislation. I discussed briefly the personality behind that operation, a self-styled “Dr. Evil” named Kim Dotcom. Born in Kiel, Germany, and once known as Kim Schmitz (later Kimble, then…well, you get the idea), Dotcom is now awaiting extradition from New Zealand to face charges of conspiracy, money laundering, and copyright crimes in the US.

He was arrested last week at his mansion in Auckland, in a raid fit for Hollywood’s finest action flicks. Helicopters hovered overhead as police cut their way into the home’s panic room, where Dotcom was reportedly hiding with a shotgun at the ready. Ars Technica, a favorite among tech enthusiasts, has written a profile of this larger-than-life figure (both figuratively and literally: Dotcom stands around six-and-a-half feet tall and weighs some 300 pounds). If you’re in the mood for a healthy dose of profligate megalomania, it makes for a very entertaining read.
