Today marks the 200th birthday of English literary giant, Charles Dickens. The iconic writer was famous for chronicling injustices of Victorian society in classics like “A Tale of Two Cities” (1859), and “Great Expectations” (1861). In reference to Dickens’ concern for the poor, Dean of Westminister, John Hall, has stated, “This bicentenary should help renew our commitment to improving the lot of the disadvantaged of our own day.”
In celebration of Dickens life and works, the Dartmouth College library is now showcasing an exhibit, Dickens at 200:Sketches, Curiosities, Expectations, on the Berry Main Street. Curated by Laura Braunstein, and designed by Dennis Grady, this exhibit gives passerby a glimpse into the mind of Dickens through the presentation of items from the library’s collections pertaining to his life. Be sure to take a second and admire the showcased works of this beloved author before the exhibit closes on April 27th.
